The USU Extension – Carbon County is looking for individuals interested in Castle Country Gardens & Landscapes for Beginners. Castle County Radio was able to sit down with Extension Assistant Professor, Steven Price to discuss all the details.
The course schedule is set to begin on March 8 with the monthly topic of Insect Friends or Foes, April 12 will be Food-scaping and May 10 will feature Water-Wise Landscapes. “One Wednesday a month, it’s usually the kind of middle Wednesday. We have these kinds of rotating topics, it’s an hour and half, so it’s enough to just kind of get people started and a lot of it is teaching people where to look for resources,” said Price. This course is taught from 6:00 am to 7:30 pm on the USU Eastern Campus inside the Reeve’s Building, Room #122. The cost to participate is only $5.00 per class.
This course is usually a smaller version of the Master Gardener Class but officials have found that over the years students from the Master Gardner Class have been attending these informative monthly sessions too. “It kind of narrow in on certain topics with the Beginner Garden Series, its just a little bit of a different approach, I think people, no matter how long you been gardening if its something that you’re even thinking about, there’s something there for everyone,” explained Price. The first course will share some healthy and safe ways to deal with insects in the garden without using chemicals.
Be sure to mark your calendar for April 1 for the Sustainable Homestead Expo taking place at the Carbon County Events Center. This gathering is a great way to network with USU Extension Officials to gain knowledge about economics, non-traditional crops, or how to manage livestock into the farm. “So it’s a time to bring all those folks together. The other thing that we’ve really seen is that we have a lot people that have these kinds of back yard business, maybe it’s a truck garden or maybe they’re doing honey production or maybe its more wool and crafts sort of things. But sometimes getting people connected to where, hey, I’m running, I’m starting my own cookie bakery, and I want to use some local honey or some local berries or something like that. Getting those folks together in the same room is cool, some really cool things happen,” said Price. The cost to attend this event is $40.00 and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. You will be able to register for the expo on https://www.eventbrite.com/
