The Carbon School District update took time to shine a spotlight on Sally Mauro Elementary this week and Castle Country Radio was able to speak with Principal, Blake Allen and Instructional Coach, Kristina Anderson about how things are going at the school.
The school is pushing for a reading goal for the entire school to read at grade level by 60 percent. If students hit this goal there is going to be a Principal Blake Allen style incentive given to the students. “So if we hit that 60 percent mark of students reading at grade level, then the students will be able to choose in which style of mustache we cut my beard off and I rock the mustache for a while,” said Principal Allen. This reward is going to be fun for kids to strive to meet their reading goal as an entire school. They have been working so hard thus far that its no doubt that the plan will be achieved. The school will keep parents and students notified of the progress through their social media pages.
The school is always looking for community members to come into the school to donate time assisting students with their academics. If you have some time that you would be willing to volunteer at the school, you need to get in contact with the district office to have a background check conducted. “They need to go to the district office and do their background check, and then I talk to the people individually and set up different times for them to come in, then we’re spreading them between first and second grade, right now, but I would also would like to get them into kindergarten, and possibly third grade to read with students,” said Anderson. Right now, school officials are trying to strengthen the reading skills of the younger students most affected by the COVID years.
The success of the school would not be possible without all the hard work from teachers. “First of all, teachers. All the hard work they are putting in for the students and tracking their levels, and seeing exactly where the students are. Mrs. Anderson and I, have been talking lately, we’re just super impressed by them. Knowing exactly where a student is, to find and get them the help that they need for the certain areas that they need help in, where they’re a little low. And changing things up, it’s crazy to go into a classroom, and that same week go back into a classroom, and the teacher has changed a bunch up, just for the needs of the students,” said Principal Allen. The school also wanted to recognize the hard work of the para-professionals that assist the teachers day in and day out, they make it easier for the teachers to instruct the students.
