013-7

The Lady Dinos, behind a terrific day on the mound and at the plate by Haven Byerly, have advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 3A State Softball Championships after a 7-1 victory over Manti.

Byerly was 2-3 from the plate logging a home-run with three RBI’s and a run scored as well as a complete game on the mound, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out 16.

The Dinos jumped out in the first inning behind Byerly’s home-run that drove in Makayla Scovill and Gabby Vasquez. Carbon’s only lapse on defense was in the third off of a grounder to center that allowed the lone Manti run.

Carbon would add single runs in the second and third inning and then in the fourth with one out and two on, a Scovill double to left, driving in Kylan Sorenson and Taylor Secor to push the score to 7-1 sealing the win and advancing the Lady Dinos.

Scovill had a great day at the plate as well going 3-4 with a pair of RBI’s and a run scored.

The win over Manti puts Carbon head-to-head with the No. 1 team in 3A, the Grantsville Cowboys.

Grantsville punched their ticket to the quarters with a 15-0 win in four innings over the No. 9 ranked South Summit Wildcats.

Grantsville and Carbon have met on the field this season back on March 17, in the fifth game on the schedule. Grantsville collected the win on their home field, 10-0.

With a victory, Carbon will move into the semi-finals, a loss and it is a long road back to the championship game.

Carbon and Grantsville are scheduled to begin Friday at the Spanish Fork Softball Complex on Field One at 10 a.m.
