USU Eastern is excited to be hosting a STEM Camp at both Carbon and Emery High Schools this month. STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Event Representative, James Powell to get all the details about the camps.
This is a hands-on camp that will open the campers’ eyes to possibilities by working on challenging projects. “One of the activities we’re going to do on Tuesday morning is build a race car. Where I just give them parts and they have to build the whole thing. Then I take one of them and I show them how to wire the adrenal board so it will actually run the motors, and everything for them. Then we test it with a remote-control kind of thing, and kids put it all together, and we see who can go the fastest,” said Powell. This is just one of the many projects that the students will be working on throughout the three-day camp.
Drones are a big part of the camp and students will learn to use the safest and most reliable drone products on the market for enhanced safety, and most of all, fun. “We work with drones; what we do is we have some drones that we program on it and the kids fly these drones via programming through our via automation through this obstacle course. Once they land, then we are done. But then they get to go in and we show them how to do a flip, so they get to add flips, they can do other things, other activities, during that,” said Powell. This portion of the camp will have a lesson on coding the drones using technology-appropriate programing languages.
Those helping with the camp are Larry Gardner with USU Eastern, Dane Worwood with Emery School District and Jeremy Johnson with Carbon School District. They are all looking forward to working with the students.
There are two camp options available for students, the schedule is as follows:
