This year the Carbon County Assessor is advising residents to review their preliminary Tax Notices for any discrepancies. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Commissioner Casey Hopes and Assessor, Gillian Bishop to get all the information about reviewing your preliminary tax notice.
“This is the public’s opportunity to make sure that what’s on the land is what is getting taxed and taxed properly. If you’ve torn down a shed or something or made improvements on the property, this is your opportunity to make sure those are correct and bring those into the office, to Gillian, and have a review with him,” said Commissioner Hopes. He also advises residents to review the Disclosure Notice which can be found on the back portion of their tax notice.
It’s important that the taxpayer understands that they have 45 days or till September 15 to present any discrepancies to the county. “Some of the things they want to look for is their property being described correctly, residential. The residential exemption is a 45 percent reduction and so if they are not getting that on to their property, and it says non-primary, and they’re living there, they want to make sure that they come in to get that cleaned up,” stated Bishop. If you find a discrepancy, you are urged to contact the County Assessor’s Office to schedule a time to review the details so that it can be corrected by September 15.
“There is something we are offering this year called Value Review. Where you can call my office, come in, sit down, we’ll first go through make sure everything looks great. Does the property, described correctly? Is the property described correctly? Is the size there accurate? Then we’ll go through and see if there are any errors or mistakes that have been made, and we can easily get those resolved,” said Bishop. The Assessor advises residents to review their preliminary tax notice as soon as possible before the above deadline.
