intro-to-fishing

The Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is excited to be hosting an Introduction to Fishing Clinic on Saturday, August 12 at 10:00 am at the DWR Office on Carbonville Road. This is perfect opportunity for beginners to learn the basics when it comes to fishing. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Conservation Outreach Manager, Brandon Behling to get all the details.

“This is an introductory course so what we’re going to do is we’re going to cover the basics of knot tying, the equipment you need, and then we’re going to cover three of the species that we have locally here so trout, catfish, and bass. So we’ll give you tips and techniques and different things that you can use here locally to be successful as you go out and hit the water trying to catch something,” said Behling. DWR officials will be on hand to share their knowledge and experiences with participants.

Guests can bring their fishing equipment if they would like but the DWR will have equipment on hand at the event. “So if you don’t have the equipment, you know, we’ll have some there so you can check it all out. We’ll go over the basics of it, how to set up your hooks, and your reels. Hopefully, we can give you the confidence that you need that when you get out there, that you will have that success,” said Behling. Whether you’re a complete novice or you’ve tried fishing before, our workshop provides a solid foundation for your angling journey.

There will be a brief overview of fishing proclamations shared at the clinic. “We’re going to have a member of our law enforcement team there, one of our Conservation Officers will be there to kind of go over the regulations and what fish species are able to be caught and kept. Because we do have some native fish in the area that they are protected, we don’t want to take them out of the rivers and streams. So we’ll be going over those basics, as well as, like you said, how to tie your knots, how to build that foundation so you can get out there and have that success,” stated Behling.

Once the classroom instruction is completed at noon participants will enjoy a free lunch before heading to the Carbon County Community Fishing Pond. At which time, participants will be able to try the techniques that they learned at the pond.  If you choose to fish at the pond after the workshop ends, you will need a valid Utah fishing license if you are 12 years of age or older.
