Each week during the school year a representative from the Carbon County School District comes in to speak with Castle Country Radio about the latest news and happenings taking place within the district. Now that the summer is winding down it is time to present the weekly series again and it’s only appropriate that the first weekly update of the 2023-2024 school year be with Superintendent Mika Salas.
One of the most important things to discuss is the attendance policy. “I really wanted to reach out to the community, and I know the high school has been doing the same, but just let everyone know. You know we really just need the kids in school. It’s very difficult to teach students when they’re not there. Obviously, but then there are a lot of ramifications to that as they come back, they need time to catch up, and the teachers are still trying to teach the kids who were there, then trying to get the other kids caught up. Not only the content but the social interaction, the relationships that are built every day at school which are just as important as that content,” said Superintendent Salas. Attendance is an important factor in student achievement.
Sports at Carbon High have begun and some students have been busily preparing for their season all summer long. “Its always busy, I don’t think Carbon High ever stops. You know, one season ends, the next one picks up, and then the off-season they are still practicing or they’re in the weight room or they’re doing something. We never really stop it; it’s definitely the competitive season that has picked back up for Fall sports and we’re super excited. They have several games before school starts every year and all the different activities that are going on. So it’s really exciting, its always just fun to see the kids involved, and out there representing themselves or families or the school – it’s a great thing,” said Superintendent Salas. Community members are always welcome to attend any of the sporting events that Carbon High participates in.
The district has implemented a new Student Information System that will soon be ready to use. “We are changing our Student Information System to PowerSchool and again, we will have more for parents coming out soon. We just are kind of in the late stages of getting everything set up for them. But I think parents will enjoy that better, there’re a lot more interactivity between the old system had and this one. We’ll be pushing those out to parents as soon as we can. We’re just tying up the last of the back end before we send that out. So those are all big changes but really I think the kids should kind of just go to school as normal, I think they’ll just be happy,” said Superintendent Salas.
