The 2023 Green River Melon Days Celebration will begin on September 15 and September 16 in Green River, Utah. This gathering is celebrating 117 years of delicious melons grown in this quaint little town in Emery County. Castle Country Radio had an opportunity to speak over the telephone with City Events Coordinator, Robin Hunt to discuss all the details of the celebration.
The fun kicks off on Friday with the softball tournament, 3-man scramble golf tournament, vendors in the city park and an opportunity to taste all the delicious melons you want. “Melon munching from our three awesome growers. We have the Vetere family, the Thayn family, and the Dunham family who all grow melons this time of year and sell them at their stands along Main Street and then they also bring trucks loads to Melon Days and they come up and serve them for everybody to have for free, you get to sample all the melons, it’s amazing,” said Hunt. This is the perfect opportunity to see what Melon Days is all about by sampling the various melons grown in Green River.
New this year in the park is a Children Entrepreneurs Market where young entrepreneurs will be selling their goods. “So we have a Children Entrepreneurs Market which is just a vendor market with just kids. They came up with their own booth, what there going to do, what there going to sell, and they handle all the transactions themselves. This takes place Friday, September 15 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, its just going to be at the park in the tennis courts. Come check out our kids and see what they are selling and what they are trying to learn,” said Robin. The children have been working hard on their products and have been looking forward to displaying those items for the public to purchase.
On Saturday there will be more softball, more melon tasting and vendors in the park. There will also be the 5K Melon Run that is being sponsored by the Green River High Athletic Department. The parade will also be held at 10:00 am on Main Street. “We have a Melon Day Trap Shoot as well, that our Green River Gun Club puts on that’s on Saturday at noon,” said Hunt. The shoot will take place at the Gun Range and the cost to participate is $5.00 for members and $10.00 for non-members.
