Carbon Caring for Kids are preparing for the upcoming school wide Thanksgiving holiday break and they are looking for individuals, families or groups to help sponsor a child with a meal kit. Coordinator, Marcie Loveless took time to come into Castle Country Radio to talk about the organization and how you can help a child with a “Meal Kit” during the Thanksgiving holiday break.

“Carbon Caring for Kids is a charity that provides food kits for kids on the weekends who may just need a little extra help. They either are not getting enough food on the weekends or their families are just going through hard times they’re just needing some extra help. So we’re providing 183 kits right now and that number just keeps on increasing. All of it is 100 percent volunteer we have the community who is paying monetary donations all of the time and food donations. So that’s what we do,” stated Loveless. Food items for the kits are gathered all week long and donated by individuals, families, and merchants. The children benefiting from the program are referred by counselors at the schools, the names of the children are anonymous to the Carbon Caring for Kids organization, only school counselors are aware of who the students are.

During regular weekends individuals are asked to donate food items to put in the meal kits via the organization’s Facebook page but with the holiday meal kits individuals are actually sponsoring a child during the holiday break. “Thanksgiving is a little bit different we ask people to actually sponsor a child. So I put out a list on the Carbon Caring for Kids Facebook group page and on that paper is everything that we ask that you provide in that kit. So its just like your sponsoring everything you put in that bag goes to your child that you are sponsoring. We need all of these kits before the Monday before Thanksgiving which is the 20th – Monday the 20th,” stated Loveless. Then on the assemble day the organization just adds bread, fruits/vegetables, and milk to the kits. They will have bags that donations will be transferred over to so that all items will be delivered to the children in one kit.

Those who wish to sponsor a child for the Thanksgiving break are urged to sign up on Carbon Caring for Kids Facebook page. “As I post it on the Facebook page, people will sign up for those kits, and I’ll just keep a running list of everyone that has signed up, so I know that we are having enough to fulfill the needs that we need,” said Loveless. If you are unable to make a food donation but would like to help the cause with a monetary donation you may do so by Venmo or stop by Mountain America Credit Union.
