
The Lady Spartans traveled to Vernal over the weekend to participate in the Shannon Johnson Classic at host Uintah High School. Emery faced Uintah on the opening night, taking the win 66-44. The final pair of games on Friday and Saturday weren’t as kind with the Lady Spartans falling to Fruita Monument 51-45 and Wasatch 66-49 to finish the weekend 1-2.
The Lady Spartans moved to 4-2 in the early part of the season, with five games to go before the Christmas break.
In the game with Fruita Monument, the first half was played pretty tightly the Wildcats outscored the Spartans by three, 18-15, and then played to a stalemate in the second quarter. Fruita would take a 30-27 lead into the locker room at the half.
In the second half, the two quarters told the tale. The third quarter belonged to the Lady Spartans taking the Wildcats to task outscoring them 15-5. Fruita Monument turned around and owned Emery 16-3 in the fourth, with the Wildcats taking the 51-45.
Katelyn Nielson led the Spartans with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Kennadie Maughn scored nine with three boards and three blocks, and Aliya Lester scored eight with one rebound and a pair of assists.
The next day, Emery would take on Wasatch. Emery owned the opening quarter winning the first 19-15. The second was all Wasps, as Wasatch put up 16 points in the quarter holding the Spartans to nine and taking a 31-28 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lady Spartans kept up the pace just behind Wasatch, 18-15. In the fourth, the Wasps took control outscoring Emery by 14 and taking the final, 69-49.
Lester led the Spartans in this one scoring 22 with five rebounds and a steal, and Nielson added 11 points and four boards. Maughn scored 11 and had three rebounds.
Up next for the Lady Spartans is a meeting with Union on Thursday at the Spartan Center.
Game time is set for 7 p.m..
