Carbon High School junior football player Deagan Richards was named to the 2023 3A All-State First Team, it was announced Tuesday afternoon.

Selected by coaches throughout the 3A classification, Richards was the lone Carbon player to receive an All-State nod. Richards earned the honor for his play at defensive back, joining Ben Lomond senior Aunese Tuatagaloa as the two First Team All-State recipients.

Richards led the Carbon defense with a team-high 56 tackles, averaging six per contest, during his junior campaign. He finished with one interception, and one caused fumble. He also led the team in passes deflected with four.

Richards delivered his highest individual single game output on Sept. 15 against Manti as he ended with nine solo tackles.

While recognized for his play on the defensive side of the ball, Richards was also a standout for Carbon on special teams. He finished with 1,057 yards on 36 punts, with a long of 54. Richards also returned six kicks for 136 yards.
