The Carbon Lady Dinos and Emery Lady Spartans delivered another instant classic on the basketball court Thursday night at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
Trailing for the first time early in the fourth quarter, Carbon ended the game on a 19-12 run to secure a 68-63 win, keeping its unbeaten Region-12 record intact.
Amiah Timothy paced Carbon in the win as she finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists. Jacie Jensen scored 16 points and grabbed seven boards, while Madi Orth contributed 12 points and five steals in limited minutes.
Faced with team wide foul trouble throughout the night, Timothy and Jensen sparked the Carbon offense at crucial times. Kylan Sorenson and Bailey Curtis both fouled out the game, while Orth was in foul trouble early and often. Timothy and Jensen took advantage of the added opportunity and produced when needed the most.
Forced to the bench throughout the first three quarters, Orth made the most of her time on the floor in crunch time. Playing with four fouls throughout the fourth quarter, Orth scored eight straight points has the game hung in the balance.
Sophomore Kenadie Maughan was the vocal point offensively for Emery as she finished with 21 points, six rebounds and three blocks. After scoring eight points in the first quarter, Maughan helped spark an Emery comeback late with nine points in the fourth.
Emery played from behind the entire game, but finally captured the lead midway through the fourth quarter. The 51-49 lead was short lived as Carbon responded with a hefty run to pull away for good.
Katelyn Nielson scored 15 of her 16 points in the second half to help the Spartans push Carbon to the brink. Karleigh Stilson poured in nine points and Kali Jensen finished with eight.
Thursday’s win moves Carbon to 6-0 in Region-12 play and 11-4 overall. The Lady Dinos are the only unbeaten team in the division as the midway point of league play nears.
The loss drops Emery to 3-3 in league action and 8-6 overall. The Lady Spartans have held leads in each of the three region losses, which have come at a combined 14-point deficit.
Both teams will take the rest of the week off before returning to the court on Tuesday.
