This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Bruin Point Elementary where Fifth Grade Teacher, Tyler Grundy took time to speak over the telephone about the school’s attendance, PTO, and 4-H programs.
Attendance is a big thing at most schools but at Bruin Point Elementary they make attending school fun by offering incentives to their students. “One of the things we always talk about as teachers is we can’t teach them if they aren’t here, right? We want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to get those kids here at school and that they’re learning, and enjoying their learning, we’re creating that safe environment for them. We’re doing all kinds of fun things; we’re doing attendance celebrations at the end of the quarter. We have our gumball machines every day. We do a daily attendance tracker,” explained Mr. Grundy. The encouragements from the school seem to be working as attendance has been great and students are thriving.
The school’s Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) is a great support system as they plan various activities for the students and their families throughout the school year. “The PTO we have out here is fantastic. They go above and beyond for our kids. We have BINGO nights every so often, the community is invited to come and play BINGO and we have concessions. I know sometimes before Christmas they did silent auctions. They’re all about making things possible for our kids, raising money for them, so that they can do the fun things that everybody else gets to do. They’re just a fantastic organization and I can’t say enough about them,” said Mr. Grundy. School officials and the PTO work closely together to ensure that they are doing everything they can for the school and its students.
The 4-H Programs in Carbon County have been gracious enough to come out to the school once a month and share various activities with the students after school. “That’s a new thing this year, my son, Easton, he actually is involved in 4-H in Carbon County there in Price. He thought he would tell DeLayna that we need to get 4-H out here. We need to get the kids involved in some 4-H activities in East Carbon. So what they do is about once every other month or once a month DeLayna and her crew, they pack up all their fun things and bring it out. The kids here in East Carbon can stay after school for a couple of hours and do some of those fun activities that 4-H has to offer,” stated Mr. Grundy. The children that have participated in 4-H are so grateful for the opportunity.
