The Carbon Dinos wrapped up the boy’s wrestling season with an 11th place finish at the 3A State Championship Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
Represented by 15 wrestlers, the Dinos gathered 51.5 points during the two-day event. Brax Tapia and Jonathan Jewkes both finished fifth place overall, while Gavin Fausett gave the Dinos another standout performance with a sixth-place finish.
Competing at 132-pounds, Tapia picked up wins in his first two matches of the tournament. After defeating Grantsville wrestlers Ben Calchera and Keaton Sullivan by pin, he suffered his first setback in a major decision loss to Juab’s Cooper Blackett. A second loss in the consolation semifinals dropped Tapia to the fifth-place match where he finished off the tournament with a win by pin over Delta’s Carter Anderson.
Jonathan Jewkes followed a similar path for the Dinos as he too finished fifth overall at 165 pounds. Back-to-back decision wins over Jed Chatwin of Union and Karson Curtis of North Sanpete had Jewkes in the semifinals. An entertaining match against Canyon View’s Alex Crawley ended in a 19-10 decision loss for Jewkes. A second decision loss placed him in the fifth-place match, where he earned a win by pin over Union’s Denver Cloward.
Gavin Fausett was the final Carbon wrestler to place as he ended sixth overall at 175-pounds after fighting his way back through the consolation bracket. After suffering a decision loss to Delta’s Campbell Warnick in the championship round, Fausett recorded three straight wins by pin. Losses in his final two matches gave Fausett a record of 3-3.
