Creekview Elementary was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Principal Keith Palmer stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss what’s been taking place at the school.
The school recently wrapped up Parent/Teacher Conferences and the school was very pleased with parent attendance. “We actually had a higher percentage of parents coming in the Spring than the Fall which is usually not the case. Usually once they’ve met the teachers its harder for them to come, but we actually had a great, we had 95 percent of our parents attend. We tried something new this year, in conjunction with Parent/Teacher we did our Science Fair at the same time,” stated Principal Palmer. This was a real hit with parents and students who were able to visit the Science Fair projects that were on display inside the school’s gymnasium.
As the school is moving along this year the Spring time is always a time for various classes to go on field trips. The school will be sending their third-grade classes to the annual Farm Animal Visit at the Carbon County Fairgrounds and the entire fifth grade will be going on their annual trip to JA City. “So JA stands for Junior Achievement and they now have two locations in Utah. What they do is they have all these businesses there and the kids go through a bunch of processes at school like they learn how to write checks and how to keep track of their money. They do an interview, we bring in a bunch of local businesses people to interview them and that helps us assign them to a job. They all get a job when they go to this city and it has to make the city work,” explained Principal Palmer. JA City programs promote 21st century skills including; critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, problem solving, and communication.
The school’s PTA Organization is preparing for Dr. Suess week at the school, they have so many fun activities and events planned for students. “So Dr. Suess’s birthday is actually Saturday so we’re celebrating it next week. But we do dress up days every day that go with his books you know Green Eggs & Ham, and crazy socks for Fox and Socks and those kinds of things. The kids they always love to dress up and do things like that. This year the PTA is doing something a little different, they had enough money from their Book Fairs that they’re actually giving every kid a book, so they’re coming in and doing a little Book Store basically, and pick out a book that they can take home, so that’ll be fun,” stated Principal Palmer. More details about the Dr. Suess week activities will be shared with students this week or on the school’s Facebook page.
