It’s time to sit down with Emery County Commissioner Jordan Leonard who was happy to report on a few items that were discussed at the last commission meeting and he also highlight the county libraries. Castle Country Radio has the opportunity every other week to speak with the commissioner to keep citizens informed on the latest news and events.

The last commission meeting there was discussion on the fee schedule for the local landfill and some changes were decided upon. “So we changed the fee schedule, just adding 20 percent interest on any unpaid landfill charges over 60 days. So we want to let the community know that. Please keep up with your payments at the landfill. Otherwise, if that’s not paid in full, dumping will not be allowed. As a county, we do want to get paid in full for those services and make sure that we have a landfill,” stated Commissioner Leonard. The land fill is open from Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:15 pm and Saturday 8:00 am to 4:15 pm.

The county also spoke about approving COVID funds to make some much needed upgrades to the County Building. “We’ve decided to upgrade the county building instead of building a new office administrative building. We’ll be redoing the HVAC system – heating and air. This will be good to regulate the building for future use and make it more comfortable for the employees. We’ll be doing a lot of projects coming up to upgrade the building but this one was approved to do the HVAC system,” explained Commissioner Leonard. The upgrades will not only benefit the county employees but the citizens of Emery County.

With every radio interview with Commissioner Leonard always takes time to highlight a department within the county for a job well done. This time he wanted to spotlight the county libraries who serve the community. “They’ve been able to go after a UECN Telecommunications grant so that mean’s Utah Education Telehealth Network Grant that was available and were able to receive that. So what this grant will do will upgrade equipment for the internet, wi-fi, the wi-fi should reach out in to the parking lot for the community. But really good upgrades,” said Commissioner Leonard. Internet services at the local libraries are important for their patrons.

The Emery County Commissioners meet twice a month at 3:00 pm at the Emery County Courthouse at 75 East Main Street in Castle Dale. A schedule of meetings is listed on the Emery County website at http://www.emerycounty.com/
