The Carbon County Fair will be taking place on May 30 through June 1 and it’s time to submit your open-class exhibit items. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with USU Extension Assistant Professor in Family and Consumer Sciences, Christina Pay to get all the details.

“If you have created it, we want to see it.  Whether its needlework or sewing or maybe canning or baking, poetry, art. We had some beautiful woodwork come in last year so we want to see what you’ve made and what you have done this past year,” said Pay. The open-class category is open to any individuals that are not involved in the 4H Program. Items can include photography, needlework, quilts, knitting, baked goods, paintings, candy, preserved foods, floriculture and horticulture – the items are endless.

The winners will be recognized by awarding various ribbons. “Ribbons are awarded, blue ribbon, red ribbon. We have a Commissioner’s Choice, the commissioners pick their favorite, and then we have the grand prize type ribbons as well. There’s a little bit of monetary awards that go along with that so absolutely show us what you have and lets hopefully get you some awards,” said Pay.  Any article exhibited at the Carbon County Fair must have been produced in Carbon County and prepared within the current fair year.

“There are several divisions, and I’ll just explain really quickly what those are. Division A is for youth, ages 5 to 17. So, youth that are 5 to 17, who are not a part of 4-H can submit an exhibit. Division B is open to Carbon County residents, ages 18 to adults, so 18 and over. Then Division C is open to residents with special circumstances. They are all in the Fair Book which you can find on the website,” said Pay. All items will be on display inside the Carbon County Event Center. Items will be accepted on May 29 with judging taking place on May 30.

To enter an open-class exhibit you must complete a registration form for every item entered into the competition. “We prefer that you pre-register, its just make it easier for you and for us. That can be done on the website, that we just talked about. So if you go there scroll down the page, you’ll that there’s a link to a form to fill out, really simple form, really easy to fill out. That’s also where you will find the Fair Book with all the instructions, and rules and that kind of thing,” explained Pay.
