The Carbon track and field squad along with all others across all classifications were in Provo over the weekend to take part in the State Track and Field Championships, hosted by Brigham Young University.  Blythe Bradford earned the State Championship in the long jump helping the Lady Dinos earn an eighth-place finish. The Carbon boys finished the meet in 15th.

Carbon coach Jimmy Jewkeas was a guest on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports before the meet and was asked about all the other things that go on this time of year with school coming to a close, how do you keep them focused for state?

“It is really, really hard, depending on where the kids are at. You know seniors, by now let’s be honest, they’re checked out. School is just about over, they’ve got Senior Sluff, and they’re done. The good thing is, is that the kids that we do have that are seniors, like the Sophie Taylors, Jordan Shorts, and the Amiah Timothys, they’re gamers. On the bus ride home from region, those girls were in the back of the bus talking about being ready, and they know, they know that they’ve got to step up their game and they’re gonna come. It’s their last time to run at state, it’s their last time to be on the track and to run with some of these teammates that they’ve been running with for four years, and that means a lot to them, and I think there is not a lot you can do as a coach other than just get out of the way and let them have some of those emotions.”

The Union Cougars earned top honors with 94.00 points, Canyon View finished second with 88.50. Delta (69.00), Emery (67.00), and Morgan (43.00) rounded out the top five.  Carbon scored 30.00 to finish in eighth.

Bradford, a freshman, was the only top finisher for the Dinos with her first place in the long jump. Bradford was also part of the 4×100 with teammates Mia Crompton, Brooklyn Lowe, and Jordan Shorts who finished in second place, and the 4×400 team of Gianna White, Sophie Taylor, and Rebecca Swasey claimed a seventh-place finish.

Crompton earned an eighth-place finish in the 200, White took seventh in the 400, and Taylor earned seventh in the 1600.

The Carbon team of Lowe, Amaiah Timothy, White, and Taylor went on to finish fourth in the sprint medley relay.

The Morgan Trojans took the top spot on the boy’s side of the track scoring  102.50, and Juab claimed second with 87.00. Union (82.00), Canyon View (79.0), and Summit Academy (58.00) rounded out the top five. Carbon finished 15 with 11 points.

Easton Humes claimed a pair of top-ten finishes in the 400, where he took fifth, and the 800, finishing in seventh.  Humes was also part of both Carbon relays. In the 4×400 he joined Evan Criddle, Bradley Sweeney, and Max Carlson as they ran to an eighth-place finish, and in the sprint medley relay Humes, Benjamin Simms, Ethan Prettyman, and Carlson finished in fifth.
