The Orangeville City Council met for a special public hearing trying to fill the vacancy on the Council left by Shaun Bell when he became Mayor. The council received a single application, that being Kari Alton, an educator with the Emery School District.
After the meeting was opened, Councilman Tracy Addley posed“Why do you want to be a city council member?”“ I’ve always watched council from afar,” Alton said, “And because of that I want to get involved with the city.”
Mayor Bell asked if you were appointed today, would you be able to help with Orangeville days and what is your strongest attribute? First, Alton answered that she was already helping with Orangeville Days, but was willing to help even more. Alton then answered the second question with one word, “patience” citing her experience with students as a teacher as evidence of that.
After the round of questions, the motion was made to appoint Alton as a member of the city council, which was passed unanimously by the council.
Alton then took the oath of office, which was administered by Orangeville City Reporter Amanda Lake, making her officially the newest member of the Orangeville City Council.
The next Orangeville City Council meeting will be held Thursday, June 16, at 6 p.m. in Orangeville City Hall. The purpose of this meeting will be to hear public comments on and possibly approve the city budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.
