Price, UT, June 10, 2024 — Land managers from the Manti-La Sal National Forest have successfully completed burning approximately 500 acres in the New Canyon project within the Sanpete Ranger District. As of June 10, 2024, closure Order Number: #04-10-1-24-1 is lifted within the area.
The New Canyon prescribed burn was implemented under favorable conditions on June 1, 2024, and continued through June 10, 2024. Fire crews are currently concluding the prescribed burn by performing mop-up and patrolling the burned area. Assigned resources for this project included a type 2 burn boss, one type 1 hand crew, one type 4 engine, and one type 6 engine; these resources provided dynamic support for completing the prescribed burn. Smoke may still be visible from Ephraim, UT and surrounding areas as fire officials conclude their work, however, the smoke should continue to lift and dissipate quickly.
Objectives of the New Canyon project have been to reduce hazardous fuel loading, improve wildlife habitat, and regenerate declining aspen stands; prescribed burning is a proactive tool used to achieve these objectives. All prescribed burns are subject to approval from the Utah Division of Air Quality; members of the public may view approved prescribed fires at www.deq.utah.gov
