Utah State University Extension continues its summer series of craft nights on Monday, July 22, with the organization’s glass etching night. Castle Country Radio sat down with Deri Thatcher from USU Extension to talk about the event.
For people who didn’t take, or simply didn’t pay attention to high school art, Thatcher explained the processes of glass etching. “So it’s where we take any type of glass like wine glasses or cake pans or in our case we’re doing coasters and What we do is we put stencils on them whether it’s like a name or flowers and then you take It’s some type of acid, it’s called armor etch and then you paint it on the stencil which is pasted on the glass and you let it sit for so many minutes and then you wipe it off and it, the acid has kind of stained the glass where it’s etched into the glass and then you wipe it off and after that, you’ve got your etch.”
Now although glass etching is a fantastic activity by itself, the series of summer craft nights has a deeper purpose than simply making some fine art. “ USU extension is offering our summer craft nights to help build and enhance community connection.” Thatcher continued,” And so we’re trying to promote these summer craft nights to build connections and kind of get out in the community. And building community connections can combat feelings of loneliness and isolation.”
“We hope you guys would like to come out to our classes,” Thatcher said, ending our conversation.
