The Summer season is in full swing, and along with that comes city celebrations all around Carbon and Emery County. A standout this year is the upcoming Cleveland Days Celebration, which will be held starting Thursday, July 18, and run until Saturday, July 20. Cleveland Mayor Preston Wilson joined Castle Country Radio to talk about all things Cleveland Days.
Starting on Thursday, July 18, the celebration gets kicked off at 6 p.m. with a free hot dog dinner with Pioneer Day at the O’ville. Mayor Wilson spoke about the event saying,” Make sure you bring your lawn chairs down, we’ll also be having the Route 10 band performing. Come look at all the historical buildings and enjoy the music with family and friends.
Also on Thursday will be a three-on-three sand volleyball tournament sponsored by Sitterud Law on Main Street. To register a team for that event you can reach out to Brydi Sharp at 435-749-0227.
Closing out the day will be a free movie night in the city park starting at 9 p.m. Playing will be “Monsters Inc.” and the Youth City Council will be selling concessions until 10:30 p.m.
Kicking things off on Friday is the continuation of the sand volleyball tournament as well as the annual bike races around Main Street and Grover Lane. Mayor Wilson talked about changes to the bike race saying,” We’re going to go different routes through town this year. We usually get most of the town with their kids out to participate so that will be a lot of fun.”
Starting at 6 p.m. there will be a lamb fry potluck. There is a cost associated with this event however, if you bring a potluck dish it will cost you $5 a plate or $25 per immediate family. If you don’t want to bring anything that cost goes to $10 a plate or $40 per immediate family.
Bookending Friday’s festivities will be a three-on-three basketball tournament. “I think it’ll be good for the kids or even adults to come out and play a little three-on-three basketball,” stated Mayor Wilson. To register for this event you can call the city at 435-653-2310.
Saturday serves as the finale for the 2024 rendition of Cleveland Days, and what a send-off it is. Things get started early at 7:30 a.m. in the park with a traditional breakfast. The cost for this event is $3 a plate or $15 for a family. The event features pancakes, bacon, eggs and hash browns so it’s something you’re not going to want to miss.
Then at 9 a.m., the city will host a flag-raising ceremony and program which will feature the Glee Club singing some patriotic songs.
After this is a couple of big-ticket items with the Kids Parade starting at 10 a.m. which will be followed by the Grand Parade at 10:30 a.m. Mayor Wilson talked about the excitement he feels for the parade,” I think it’ll be good this year. We have a lot of people who signed up for it. So I think it’s going to be a good, good one this year.”
After the parades you can look forward to an afternoon of fun starting at noon with a pingpong ball drop, and horseshoe tournament, and the city’s annual Kids Day at the Park.” So what we did this year, we kind of changed it up a little bit. We usually have Kids Day on Friday day, but we decided to move it to Saturday. So we kind of can combine everything. We’re going to have bouncy houses there and a whole bunch of kids’ games.” Mayor Wilson explained.
Rounding out the celebration will be music and dancing along with vendors at the Elementary School Yard. “We’ve done well about getting a lot of food vendors. We got Ruben’s BBQ, Get Your Smoke On, the Purple Shake, the Fish and Chips and Angel’s Landing.” Mayor Wilson shared,” And we’re gonna have Polly’s and Smallie’s and Yum! We have Waffle Love coming this year too.”
And then rounding out the day will be Fireworks which Mayor Wilson described as,” probably the best in the county” due to how close you can get to them.
