When it comes to the safety of our children, it’s a full-community effort. It takes all of us paying attention and being cautious to prevent tragedy within our communities, especially regarding traffic-related incidents. Price City Mayor Micheal Kourianos sat down with Castle Country Radio to talk about some changes coming to the city aimed at making the community a safer place.
Opening us up, Mayor Kourianos described what led to the changes being put in place,” as a council, we have a time where we bring our crossing guards in and right at the first of the year and we have breakfast. We talk about the safety and the different procedures they are to enforce. And the last couple of years, it’s been evident to us that our crossing guards are dodging cars.” He continued,” Now we have these traffic cones out to identify where the pedestrian lane is so that motorists will slow down in that section. And they’re still dodging cars, not just our crossing guards, but those crossing guards, what is their purpose? Their purpose is to get those students across the street safely. And that’s the other part that’s alarming.”
After explaining the problem, Mayor Kourianos explained what the council members and police force decided as a potential solution,” A couple of crossing guards met with Chief Sicillia and I, and so we purchased cameras. So now, our crossing guards will have cameras on their body so that if there is a motorist that is violating or not paying attention, that crossing guard will have a videotape of that motorist and we’ll be issuing a citation because that is important for the safety of those students.”
Kourianos also explained what some of the target areas of these changes would be,” Places that are pretty evident to us are 800 North, the Pinnacle school zone and also Carbon Avenue … Those are heavily traveled areas with parents taking their children to school and also people going to work in that time frame. So that’s the one thing that we want to make sure of is that our motorists and our citizens are aware of those flashing lights, those cones, those pedestrian sections that we’ve identified for the children to safely cross to go to school.”
Closing out the conversation, Mayor Kourianos left us with this,” thank you for everything that our community is doing to pull together. The council is working to listen to the citizens and trying to make a difference. I think that collectively when we’re all pulling together in one direction to achieve that goal and whatever that goal has been set for the community is very important to us. We’re listening.”
