Emery County Commissioner Jordan Leonard joined Castle Country Radio for our biweekly conversation about what’s happening in Emery County. This week, that included a shoutout to the Southeastern Utah Health Department (SEUHD) and an update on the inland port coming to the county.

Starting our conversation, Commissioner Leonard shouted out the SEUHD,” Let’s give that shoutout to the Health Department, just helping us fight opioids and the challenges that we have in the community.” Leonard continued,” They always support the health of our community, and they’ve been a great partner. We are grateful for all that they do in our community.” A more in-depth look at the SEUHD Harm Reduction Program aimed at combating addiction can be found here.

Commissioner Leonard then took the time to talk about some of the highlights from the Commission meeting held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, first talking about the Utah Inland Port Authority visiting the meeting,” They’re an organization through the state. They presented in commission meeting and spoke to us about the kind of relationship they would like to have with the county.” Leonard explained,” And some of the benefits from the Inland Port would be site areas for business recruitment, some infrastructure, and then there’s also some funding that comes through that relationship to help businesses expand and grow.”

Another highlight of the meeting was the Utah Cooperative Marketing Grant received by the Emery County Office of Tourism.” This is nice because our focus has been on county events and trying to monetize the success of those events. And we’re able to get some really good data on visitors. So having that extra money to have more events and help our current events get bigger. If anybody out there is interested in running an event in Emery County, we have resources to help them. Whether it’s paying for prizes or different things to help those events run through marketing.”

On the topic of events, Commissioner Leonard pivoted to some upcoming activities within the county,” We have Peach Day, Sept. 5 through the 7th. That’s always great. And then we have Melon Days, Sept. 20 through the 21st.” A big part of Melon Days is the accompanying softball tournament, which Commissioner Leonard spoke highly about,” These are fantastic events to end the fall.” To register for the Melon Days Softball Tournament, follow this link.

Another event that Commissioner Leonard touched on was the upcoming WB Bike Family Car/Bike show.” It’s a car and bike show fundraiser at the Rec Center. Registration starts at 9 a.m. so if you have a beautiful car or bike go ahead and enter.” More information can be found on the events Facebook page here.

Closing us out, Commissioner Leonard simply stated,” Everybody, enjoy your fall.”
