It’s time for another Carbon School District Update! This week we sat down with Creekview Elementary principal Keith Palmer to talk about summer prep, the start of the school year and what’s coming up for the Creekview Coyotes.
Starting off, we asked Principal Palmer what the summer prep was like for the faculty at the elementary,” It was quite busy for the teachers. We have a brand new reading curriculum that they’ve been working on.” explained Palmer,” so they’ve been in there a lot, getting ready to teach this brand new curriculum and get ready for the kids. Anybody who thinks that teachers only work nine months has never been to a school in the summer to see how many times they’re there.”
Principal Palmer then took the time to talk about how Creekview helps new students adjust to the school,” we try to do a lot to make sure kids know the expectations, but we also try to do it in a fun way that gets them excited about being there. So we take them on a tour of the school and they’re taught the expectations in each area, how do you behave in the library? How do you behave when you go to lunch? At each stop, they pick up these little knickknacks and finally at the end they get their school shirt. And so it’s also their way of belonging in a sense.”
These shirts Palmer explained, are sponsored by Utah State University Eastern, which makes it so every student regardless of financial situation can have a school shirt. “We appreciate USUE and it’s just a fun way to welcome the students back.”
Principal Palmer then looked ahead to what’s coming up for the Coyotes,” It’s kind of a balancing act this year with this new curriculum and how many things we do. But we had our back-to-school night, and we’ve got a parent-teacher conference coming up. It’s a chance for parents to come in and get to talk with the teachers.” Palmer continued to an exciting event for the students on Friday,” We have a traveling planetarium that’s coming. It’s a blowup planetarium they’re going to put in the gym … it seems like science is often the thing that there just is never enough time for. So when we can find an opportunity to do it differently, it’s always a good opportunity without taking a lot of time away from the teaching that the teachers need to do.”
Closing out our interview, Principal Palmer stated,” We are so excited to have the kids back; that’s why we work so hard in the summer so we can have fun with them all year.”
