Senior year of high school brings along many lasts in a student’s life. Last football game, last prom and last homecoming are all things that weigh on a senior’s mind. In addition to these lasts, there also come many firsts that students must consider, first house, first job and first college applications.

At Emery High School, faculty and administration aim to ease some of this burden through College Application Day, a chance for seniors to meet with schools from across the state and apply free of charge.

10 different colleges were present at the event, ranging from technical schools like UB Tech and Utah Tech to more traditional schools like the University of Utah and Southern Utah University.

Seniors had the entire morning of Nov. 6 to explore these different higher education options. Upon arrival, students were given a folder containing their transcript, GPA and a map of the school that showed where the different school’s booths were located.

“It’s been pretty fun,” said Emery High senior Josh Howard,” It’s a great way to get me involved in applying to colleges because it’s hard with my schedule.” Howard also talked about how easy the school made the process,” They made this pretty easy here. It surprised me how simple it is. The way they make it seem like it is super difficult but no, this has been pretty easy.”

Emery High Councilor Felicia Jeffs organized the event. She spoke to Castle Country Radio on the importance it holds for these students,” I think it’s important because well, sometimes students don’t know how to apply to college. Having the college reps here to assist them is helpful and also it’s important that they apply everywhere and accept all their scholarships and decide later where they want to go.”

As for the process of getting all the separate colleges together, Jeffs explained that it can be a time-consuming endeavor, “It is difficult. But because I have such great reps at different schools, it hasn’t been that bad, but it does take a little bit of coordination.”
