The Carbon County Board of Commissioners met on Wednesday, Nov. 11 for their regularly scheduled Commission meeting. Compared to prior weeks, the Commissioners faced a relatively light load, featuring mainly recognition and approvals for smaller business items.

Opening the meeting, the county award for Employee of the Month was presented to Jennifer Maxfield, who works with the Carbon County Ambulance and has served with the department for 28 years. Janarie Cammans and Becky Pierce nominated Maxfield for the award, with Cammans presenting. She explained that Maxfield,” still has the new guy drive and dedication she goes above and beyond to make sure people feel loved and accepted.” Cammans continued,” When it comes to building camaraderie, there’s no one better. Jennifer works tirelessly to continue to grow and learn. She recently went through The Paramedic program and gained the license to better serve this community and her patients. She did that out of the goodness of her own heart and her own pocket. This type of dedication is obvious to all of us.”

Cammans closed stating,” Jennifer Maxfield deserves this recognition for so many other reasons … We’re lucky to have her.” Maxfield was then presented with the award. When asked for comment, she shared,” I hope they all know they mean the world to me, they are family.”

Next was the Carbon County Super Service Award, which went to Anne Air from Bakesters. The nomination for Air read,” Thank you Anne for providing a friendly and warm place to visit. I have only been to Bakesters a couple of times and both times she has been the face behind the counter. I was sure to tell her how pleasant she was and how much customers appreciate a good customer service experience.” Air was then presented with the award.

Following these presentations, the Commissioner’s next action item was to open bids for two projects, the first at the Carbon County Airport for engineering services and the second for a reroofing project at the Carbon County Recreation Building.

For the airport, two bids were received. The first bid was from BNA Consulting based out of West Valley City, Utah, and the other was from Woolpert Engineering. Commissioner Casey Hopes explained that this bid process is required by the Federal Aviation Administration, which requires every five years the job opens up for bid, and that the airport must have an engineer listed.

For the Recreation Building, it was explained by Commissioner Tony Martines that due to recent high winds there were some damaged shingles that needed to be replaced, and it was a priority as winter is rapidly approaching and the county wants to avoid any potential water damage to the facility. One bid was received from B & R Roofing and Reconstruction. The bids for both projects were acknowledged by the Commissioners and passed on to their respective committees.

The next item of business was the approval of a county credit card for Kourtney Cox, the recreation department head. Commissioner Martines explained that because of a change in position from HR to recreation, Cox would need a credit card for purchases. Before approving the card, Commissioner Hopes jokingly added,” Let’s set a short limit on this one.”

Following this on the agenda, the Commissioners looked at the potential renewal of a contract between the county and Robert Weidner, a lobbyist who has worked with legislators to help deliver funding to the Carbon Corridor. Following a brief discussion regarding the potential benefits of contracting Weidner, the Commissioner approved the decision.

The final action for the Commissioners was the approval of a contract for predator control with the state. Commissioner Hopes explained that this contract was paid in full to the state with half being refunded at the end of the year. Commissioner Larry Jensen stated the contract was for $8,400 with $4,200 reimbursed at the end of the year.

The Board of Commissioners was then adjourned with the trio rejoining as the Board of Equalization, where they approved two separate batches of assessor-initiated adjustments.

Following this, the meeting was adjourned.

The Carbon County Commissioners meet biweekly in the Carbon County Administration Building, with the next scheduled meeting set for Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 4:30 p.m. For those unable to attend in person, a livestream of the meeting is available on YouTube and Facebook.
