The Emery Spartans closed out the regular season with a bang, defeating the Summit Academy Bears 38-21 Friday night in Bluffdale.
Trailing 13-0 midway through the opening quarter, the Spartans scored 38 unanswered points to carry control throughout the second half. The key to Emery’s success offensively was a heavy dose of the ariel threat, which accounted for five scores.
Junior quarterback Wade Stilson produced his best start of the season as he completed 26-of-42 passes for 357 yards and five touchdowns. Four of those five scores came in the first half, giving Emery a 28-13 lead at the break.
Stilson’s top target was once again Creek Sharpe, who hauled in 12 catches for three touchdowns and 177 yards. Matt Olsen complimented Sharpe with 96 yards and a score on five receptions. Koalton Curtis brought in two receptions for 48 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown.
Thursday’s win solidified a second-place finish for Emery in the 2A North with a final region mark of 4-1. Overall, the Spartans finished 6-3, earning non-region wins over Union and Carbon.
With the regular season now complete, the UHSAA released its final RPI rankings Saturday morning. The four-game winning streak to finish the season was enough for Emery to earn the No. 3 seed in the upcoming state tournament.
