The Emery High School wrestling team qualified 15 individuals for next weekend's 3A State Championship tournament. Teams of 13-year-olds from Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah will descend upon Carbon County in late July for the opportunity to represent the Pacific Southwest Region at the World Series held in New York in mid-August. One local team, the Battle 13U squad, will be coached by Darek Martinez, Rob Smith, Justin Powell, and Timmy Urbanik and represent Carbon County.
Ahead of the upcoming tournament, three members of the Battle team joined KOAL's Drive Time Sports. Rigdon Rhoten, Austin Leonard and Jack Madrid all talked about a recent tournament, this year's team and the upcoming Pacific Southwest Regional.
Wednesday's Drive Time Sports featured Alex Hayden of the Motor Racing Network, who helped preview the Daytona 500, which will air live on KOAL 107.3 FM and 750 AM Sunday at 11:30 a.m.. Plus, Emery High School wrestling coach Kirk Christiansen joins to talk about his team's performance at the Divisional Tournament and to preview the State Championship Tournament next weeked.
