The Emery Spartans inched closer to a Region 12 championship after defeating the Grand Red Devils 92-51 Friday night at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale.
The Spartans continued to roll just two days after taking over the region’s top spot. Carrying a 24-15 lead into the second quarter, Emery exploded on a 30-9 run to put the game out of reach and earn its sixth consecutive victory.
“Every game matters with the RPI, so even though we won over Canyon View we knew we had to stay focused against Grand,” said head coach Dave Justice. “Give credit to Grand. They came out strong at first and it was a back and forth game. All of a sudden we hit some shots and gained some momentum.”
Holding a 30-plus point lead the majority of the second half, the Spartans were able to go deep into their bench. A total 10 players scored at least three points and all 18 players who dressed received varsity time.
Creek Sharp scored a team best 14 points, hitting two shots from beyond the perimeter. Zack Tuttle and Talon Tuttle both scored 12 points, and Luke Justice finished with 11 to lead another impressive offensive performance.
“The game dictated that we had the opportunity to play everybody and that’s great for those guys,” said Justice. “I’m super proud of them. We saw a lot of good things and I thought the bench moved the ball really well.”
Emery has now won six consecutive games, a streak that dates back to January 13. During the six game winning streak the team has averaged 78 points per contest, scored more than 80 points three times and won three games by double digits.
Friday’s win guarantees the Spartans at least a share of the Region 12 crown. With only game left on the regular season slate, Emery can clinch the division crown with a win over Carbon on Wednesday or a Richfield loss to Carbon on Friday, Feb. 10.
The final regular season game will take place at the Spartan Center on Wednesday, in a rematch with the Carbon Dinos. Emery won the first meeting 84-63 in Price.
