The Carbon Dinos managed to hold off a late South Summit surge to preserve a 63-60 victory Wednesday night in Kamas.

Trailing by double-digits in the second half, the Wildcats unleashed a 16-0 run to draw even with Carbon at the two-minute mark in the fourth quarter. Timely defense and execution inside the paint eventually sealed the game for the Dinos.

Senior Brady Gagon delivered his most potent offensive performance of the season, finishing with a game-high 21 points, while also handing out three assists. Kaleb Nelson logged a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards, while Merrick Morgan notched 16 points in the win.

With less than one minute to play in regulation Nelson gave Carbon the go-ahead lead with a shot inside the paint. Moments later Caleb Winfree used forced a turnover, leading to a transition layup to give Carbon a four point advantage.

Down 61-57 South Summit’s Gabriel Harry connected on a long distance three-point make to bring the Wildcats back within one. Brady Gagon converted two free throws to extend the lead to three and a last second South Summit heave fell short as the clock hit zero.

Harry led the way for South Summit with 17 points, 15 of which came from beyond the three-point line. Payton Sanderson also reached double-figures with 15 points.

Wednesday’s road victory snaps a two-game losing skid for the Dinos, bringing their overall record to 4-2 on the season. The loss marks the third consecutive for South Summit, dipping their mark to 2-5.

Carbon will return to the court on Friday as they welcome in the Delta Rabbits for the first of two games in two days. Saturday the team will travel to Maple Mountain for an afternoon tip-off set for 2:00 p.m..
