The Emery Lady Spartans put an exclamation point on the swim regular season by winning the Region 12 Championship Thursday afternoon at the Desert Wave Pool in Price.
Competing against six schools from the division, Emery finished with 467 points, topping the defending 3A State Champion Lady Dinos, who finished second with 408 points. Richfield ended in third, followed by Grand and Gunnison. South Sevier and North Sevier rounded out the field of seven.
The Emery boy’s team made a deep push, but ultimately fell just shy of the region title with a second place finish. Richfield claimed the top spot with 482 points compared to 401 for Emery. Grand finished third with 315, while Carbon and Gunnison rounded out the top five.
Haley Guymon made the most of her opportunities at the region finale as she finished first in both the 200 yard IM and 100 yard breaststroke. Kaelee Hooley was also a top individual performer for Emery, securing first place in the 100 yard free and second place in the 50 free.
Both Guymon and Hooley teamed with Cambrie Jensen and Abby Johansen for a second place nod in the 200 yard medley relay. Guymon, Hooley and Jensen later teamed with Sydney Carter for second place in the 400 yard free relay.
On the boy’s side of the pool Dax Minchey, Elias Morris, Asher Beagley and Mathew Hanson combined for a first-place finish in the 200 yard medley relay as they completed the race in 1:51.22.
The group of four later teamed up once again to record the top finish in the 200 yard free relay with a time of 1:38.20.
Beagley logged the top individual finish for the Emery boy’s team as he ended the 100 yard fly with a time of 1:01.97.
With the region portion of the schedule now complete, the Spartans will have one week to prepare for the State Championship competition on Feb. 7 and 8.
The season finale will once again be held at Brigham Young University in Provo. The top qualifiers from throughout the season will compete for both individual and team championships.
