After winning the Region 12 golf championship with a clean sweep of the season and reclaiming the Eastern Utah Cup last week in Vernal, the Carbon Dinos are set to travel to Midway for the 2016 State Championship tournament Wednesday and Thursday at the Soldier Hollow Golf Course.

Ryker Smith, Kayden Alderson, Joey Penovich, Ryan Gagon, Carson Martines and Wyatt Henrie will represent the school at the state finale, while Brady Gagon will also compete individually. The team will first tee-off at 10:40 AM.

“This team is very capable of winning a state championship, but everything has to come together,” said head coach Tom King on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports. “We are not as deep as some of the other teams. We need to have four scores 75 or better and I think its very possible.”

Brady Gagon will be the first to tee-off on hole No. 1 at 10:30. Gagon has been paired with Jack Wright and Parker Cutt, both from Park City.

In team play the Dinos have been paired with Park City, Logan and Pine View. Henrie will be the first to tee-off at 10:40 AM, followed by Martines, Gagon, Penovich, Alderson and Smith all ten minutes apart.

Five out of the six golfers competing in the team portion of the tournament represented the Dinos last year in the state finale when team finished fifth overall. After a highly successful 2016 regular season the expectations of succeeding at the state tournament have grown.

“Our first goal was to win every match we played in and they did that,” said King. “Next was to win the Eastern Utah Cup and we did that. Next is to achieve the goals they have set for themselves at the state tournament.”

The state tournament will be spread over two days on Wednesday and Thursday. Stay tuned to Castle Country Radio for the results as they become available.
