The Emery Spartans failed to manufacture a single run in the regular season finale, which ultimately led to a 3-0 loss to the Gunnison Bulldogs Friday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Gunnison pitcher Jaden Mayne gave a complete game effort, allowing just six hits to equal his strikeout total in the shutout. Friday’s win was the second in as many games for Gunnison against the Spartans, the first coming on Tuesday.

“Hats off to Gunnison, they are a great team and very well coach,” said Emery manager Shawn Alton. “Both of these games could have gone either way, and unfortunately for us, we were able to come away with a win.”

Zac Jorgensen pitched five solid innings striking out six, but allowing two earned runs off of seven hits. Race Nielsen pitched the final two frames in relief, giving up four hits and one earned run.

Colton Willson was the lone Spartan to record multiple hits, ending 2-3 with two singles. Easton Gordon, Tel Gardner, Koda Alton and Jorgensen also notched one single a piece. Friday marked just the second time Emery has been shutout this season.

The regular season ending loss moves the Spartans to 6-4 in the 2A East, placing them in third heading into the state tournament. Emery still had an opportunity for a region title entering the final week of league play, needing two wins over Gunnison to grab the top spot.

Locked in as the No. 3 seed from the 2A East Region, the Spartans will travel to Kanab for the first and second rounds of the state tournament this Saturday. Emery will meet Summit Academy, the No. 2 seed from the North in the first round.
