The Emery Spartans opened the 2017 swim season by easily defeating Millard and Wasatch Academy Tuesday evening at the Emery County Aquatic Center in Castle Dale.

Claiming six first place finishes in 11 events, the Emery Lady Spartans gathered 407 points, defeating second place Millard by 201. Wasatch Academy rounded out the field of three with just 32 points.

Emery was also victorious on the boy’s side of the pool as they accumulated 331 points, compared to 271 for Millard. Wasatch Academy again finished third with 196 points.

The Lady Spartans opened the meet up by handily winning the 200 yard medley. Alexis Johansen, Angellena Migliori, Kaelee Hooley and Haley Guymon ended with a time of 2:13.47, finishing 22.34 seconds better than second place.

Johansen continued her standout evening by taking first in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:47.37. Second place went to Emery’s Abigail Olsen, who finished in 3:03.53.

Sydney Terwillegar defeated teammate Makyan Nielson in the 100 yard fly in the ninth event of the afternoon. Migliori added another individual first place nod in the 100 yard breaststroke, topping three teammates with a time of 1:21.93.

Emery claimed two more first place nods in relay events, winning both the 200 and 400 yard free relay. Guymon, Migliori, Terwillegar and BriAnne Bass combined for a time of 2:03.41 in the 200, while Hooley, Bass, Terwillegar and Johansen claimed first in the 400.

Like the girls, the boys also won six of 11 events to pull away for a comfortable victory. Deegan Minchey, Keldan Guymon, Asher Beagley and Parker Stilson won the 200 yard medley in dominating fashion with a time of 1:57.10.

Individually Guymon continued to thrive with wins in both the 200 yard free and the 100 yard backstroke. Malone Moss won the 100 yard fly, while Minchey took home first in the 500 yard free.

The second relay win came in the 200 yard free as Stilson, Jonathan Seely, Beagley and Guymon finished in 1:44.21. The finish was roughly three seconds better than second place Wasatch Academy.

With the first meet of the season now complete, the Spartans will turn their attention to the Cedar City Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Emery will join a number of schools, including the Carbon Dinos. The next home meet will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
