Easton Gordon delivered a gem from the mound as the Emery Spartans blanked the Grand Red Devils 4-0 in the Region 15 opener Tuesday afternoon in Castle Dale.

Entering league play with four consecutive wins, the Spartans took control early with two runs in the opening frame. Emery added one more run in the third and another in the fifth to grab the comfortable win.

Jesse Barnett finished 2-2 with an RBI at the plate to lead the Spartan’s small offensive push. Gordon helped contribute with two hits of his own, also registering an RBI. Koda Alton managed to draw two walks, scoring each time he reached the bases.

Gordon’s pitching performance propelled the Spartans in the field as he went the distance in a shutout effort. Striking out four throughout the contest Gordon allowed just two walks.

Now sitting 1-0 in league play the Spartans will return to the field Wednesday with a home tilt against the Union Cougars in non-league action. Emery will again meet Grand on Friday to wrap up the season series.
