Seth Gordon Peterson was sentenced on Wednesday in the Seventh District Court for the double murder of his mother and brother in November 2016.
Judge George M. Harmond sentenced Peterson to one to 15 years on Count 1 – Manslaughter, 25 years to life on Count 2 – Aggravated Murder, six years to life on Count 3 – Attempted Aggravated Murder, five years to life on Count 4 – Aggravated Robbery and zero to five years on Count 5 – Fail to Stop or Respond at Command of Police. Prison sentences will run concurrently with credit of 462 days given to the defendant for time served.
Peterson, who was 26-years-old at the time was accused of shooting and killing his mother, Susan Peterson, and brother, James Peterson near the town of Hiawatha in November 2016. Peterson was apprehended the same day and booked into the Carbon County Jail with charges filed against him of two counts of aggravated murder, as well as counts of attempted murder, aggravated robbery and failure to stop at the command of a police officer.
In December of last year, the trial for the murders began where jurors listened to testimony over the course of four days. The group of jurors began deliberation and were able to agree upon a verdict the same day. Jurors found Peterson guilty for killing his 23-year old brother, then reduced the charge to manslaughter for the death of his 45-year-old mother. The three remaining charges also resulted in a guilty verdict.
Prosecutors made an announcement in January of this year that they would not pursue the death penalty if the suspect was convicted.
