The Emery Spartan baseball team took to the field for the first time this season in Mesquite as part of the five team Cactus Classic Tournament hosted by Virgin Valley High School.

In their first game on Thursday the Spartans would meet up with Sports Leadership and Management out of Henderson Nevada. After a quiet first two innings, Sports Leadership’s bats would wake up in the top of the third collecting six runs. Scoring again in the fifth and the sixth innings, they would get the victory over Emery 11-1.

Ryker Jensen would start it off on the mound going just over two innings giving up six runs (two earned) on one hit while walking five. Kove Johansen would go three innings giving up five runs (one earned) on five hits while walking two.

On the offensive side, Oakley Alton scored the only run in the bottom of the fifth inning, he also registered one hit along with Teagan Christman. Jace Mangum would also add a hit on a day when offense was difficult for Emery to find.

This was game one of what will be a weekend that will have the Spartans playing four games in three days. Next up for Emery will be Moapa Valley, a team from Overton, Nevada.
