Sally Mauro Elementary and Helper Middle Schools in Helper are looking forward to hosting an end of the school year parade down the city’s historic Main Street on Wednesday, May 20 at 6:30 pm. Principal Blake Allen took some time from his busy schedule to speak with Castle Country Radio about the details of the parade.

“We at Sally Mauro wanted to go out with a bang. We also wanted to celebrate the students and families. Just this hard time, that we’ve all been going through but we also wanted to really celebrate teachers,” said Principal Allen. It has been a unique time for teachers as they have had to develop lesson plans via Chromebooks and teach each of their students virtually since the middle of March. Everyone seems to have adapted well to the changes so this is an opportunity to recognize the hard work of teachers as well as of the students.

The parade organizers have received support from Helper City’s Mayor, as Principal Allen explains, “So the Mayor, Lenise Peterman, she is going to help us out by getting law enforcement involved, as well as the Fire Department. They’re going to shut down Helper’s Main Street for our parade. We will do the parade up Helper Main Street and continue under the overpass as soon as teachers are done, they will go to the schools that they teach at and this is not only just teachers but also is staff members.”

Students can then make their way up to their designated school to continue the parade as they line up for a quick drive-by so their school can show them that they appreciate all the hard work they have put in this school year. “Come down second avenue, we will have the gates open where the busses go so cars can drive right through there. We’ll hand you a pizza, we’ll hand you a two-liter, we’re going to wave. We want you guys to scream at the teachers, just show them the energy that you miss them, you appreciate them and they will probably scream and wave back,” said Principal Palmer. Only Sally Mauro students will receive a pizza and soda.  Families are encouraged to make their way down to Helper Middle School where they will be handing out free ice cream sandwiches to all students.
