The annual Lunatic Triathlon will return for its 11th consecutive year Friday night in Price.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the nuances for this year’s event have changed. The typical adult triathlon will be offered free of charge. However, other traditional events will not be offered.

“This year we won’t be able to offer the kids triathlon or the off-road maximus course,” said event organizer Scott Merrell. “A big part of that is not being able to use the outdoor pool, which still has the bubble on it. Each person would have to push the revolving door to go inside and out, creating points of contact.”

The swimming portion of the event will take place at the indoor pool of the Desert Wave Pool, creating less contact for those competing.

This year’s event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 p.m.. Event officials will arrive beginning at 8:00 at the parking lot just east of the Desert Wave Pool.

“Everyone who wants to participate can show up and basically sign in using their smart phone,” Merrell said. “That way no one has to sign papers, share pens or have contact with anything. It’ll all be electronic and free.”

This year’s triathlon will not be officially timed like years past in order to create a safe environment. However, all participants who complete the triathlon before Merrell will receive a medal from past events.

“Anyone that can come out and beat my time will still get a medal at the end of the night,” said Merrell. “Hopefully that can inspire a few athletes. Come out, beat Scott and have a great time.”
