The Emery Spartans earned a third place finish in the golf season opener Wednesday afternoon at Round Valley, the home course of the Morgan Trojans and this year’s State Championship site.

Competing against a heavily talented Region 12 field, the Spartans ended with a team score of 354. Carbon easily won the meet with a brilliant 324, defeating second place Richfield’s score of 342.

The Spartans battled with South Sevier and Grand, who finished in fourth and fifth place respectively. South Sevier ended with a team score of 358, edging Grand’s total of 359. San Juan finished last with a 435.

Emery was led by Trevin Wakefield’s individual score of 81, which placed him inside the top five overall. Kavery Killpack provided the second score for the Spartans with an 87. Tayven Guymon was third on the team with a 90, followed by Devan Guymon’s 96.

The six region teams will continue to compete with a meet scheduled for each week through Oct. 7 and 8. The Spartans will play host to their lone home meet on Thursday, Sept. 24.
