This week’s Carbon School District updates shines a spotlight on Castle Heights Elementary. Principal Wendy Fluckey took time to speak over the telephone with Castle Country Radio to talk about testing, elections and PTA.

The new school year is almost a month in and the school has been busy testing their students to see where they stand academically. “So we’ve actually completed that process and then this week we are doing additional diagnostic testing on students that teachers have requested to do additional testing, just so we can really pinpoint their strengths and weaknesses, and where we need to go with the instruction,” said Principal Fluckey. Testing is part of learning and this assists teachers to identify what each student is in need of academically.

“I was pleasantly pleased with how our current second and third grade students had performed on the testing that I didn’t see the big regression, it wasn’t as big as what I anticipated and I truly do contribute that to the teachers doing their virtual teaching online, the parents support,” said Principal Fluckey. Although, the numbers from testing this year are slightly lower than last year the school feels confident that students with progress just fine.

At this time, there are some fifth-grade students that are participating in the Student Government elections. “We have posters up all over the hallway and part of the process is they’ll be voting by the fifth-graders, as well as interviews by the fifth-grade teachers and myself. So we do have interviews scheduled for this week and next week, and then the teachers will tally the points and then that’s how our Student Government is chosen,” explained Principal Fluckey. The chosen students will represent school’s student body for the remainder of the school year.

The school’s PTA have already been meeting with the school’s administration to determine the activities that can be held this year. “So with our Book Fair, traditionally the Book Fair, the Fall Book Fair happens during the week of parent/teacher conferences in October but due to restrictions we’re just going to do a virtual Book Fair this year,” said Principal Fluckey. Further information and details about the Book Fair will be sent home with students in October.
