Carbon ended the pre-season last week falling to Union in Roosevelt, and Friday night region play began on the road in Richfield. The Dinos came out and scored in the first quarter but couldn’t keep pace with the Wildcats and started conference play with a 42-7 loss.
Carbon entered region play with a 1-4 record. On Monday September 14 the original RPI rankings from the Utah High School Activities Association were released and Carbon sat at No. 16. Region 12 is well represented with three teams in the top 10, Richfield at No. 5, San Juan at No. 6 and Emery at No. 7. Richfield also came in to Friday night game with a 4-1 record, their only loss coming at the hands of North Sanpete who currently sits at No.2 in the RPI.
Carbon started the game with senior Keaton Rich at quarterback however, Rich would leave with a possible shoulder injury in the fist quarter and junior Hayden Tallerico would take over scoring Carbon’s only touchdown on a three yard run as time expired in the opening quarter. Tallerico would make it till the fourth quarter when sophomore Wyatt Falk would take over for the last four series.
On the defensive side of the ball the Dinos couldn’t find an answer for the Wildcats’ Kasey Giddings. Giddings had four scores 3 touchdown runs and a 28 yard pass from Gavin Brown.
In the second half it became a battle fo field position with Richfield keeping Carbon pinned deep in their own territory for the majority of the final two quarters.
Carbon now will have to get ready for Emery next week for homecoming. Emery comes off of a 49-22 win at home against Grand. Emery currently sits at 3-3 and 1-0 in region. last year when these two teams met in Castle Dale, the Spartans claimed the close 26-21 win after a late Carbon drive stalled with less than four minutes left.
