Emery ended the non-region portion with a heart breaking loss last week in Nephi against Juab. The second season began on Friday night with the conference opener against Grand. Emery jumped out to a quick 21-0 first quarter lead, and held on down the stretch to win the game 49-22 in Castle Dale.
Going in to tonight contest the Spartans were 2-3 and were No. 7 in the initial RPI rankings released by the state on Monday September 14. Grand on the other hand was sitting at 0-5 and ranked No. 15.
Emery jumped out quickly with Jace Curtis returning the opening kickoff 95 yards for a score. After missing last week against Juab, Curtis was just getting started. With just over four minutes left in the first quarter Ryker Jensen would connect on a 13-yard pass with Jeremy Brannon and Curtis would cap off the the first with a 2 yard run, pushing the score to 21-0.
In the second quarter Curtis would add a four yard scamper to push the Emery lead to 28-0. Junior Josh Olsen picked up where Curtis left off scoring on a 36 yard run. Olsen would have another touchdown run of 42 yards in the third.
Ryker Jensen would have a great night at the quarterback position throwing for two touchdowns including an 84 yard to Jace Mangum. Jensen would also have a 1 yard touchdown run.
The defense would come up big in the game as well with six turnovers in the game.
For Grand, Ryeland Jones was a bright spot completing 12 and 18 yard passes for a touchdowns to Chance Arbon. Jones would also add a 1 yard run in the closing minutes of the fourth.
Next week for Emery they will travel to Price to face the Carbon Dinos. Even though it’s a rivalry game head coach Jon Faimalo would like it to be like any other game.
“I’m hoping they treat it like the Grand game, it’s just another game and get back to business.” Faimalo continued,” We just need to put our best foot forward and we’ll see what happens.”
The game on Friday will be broadcast on KOAL 10.3 FM and 750 AM as well as streamed live at castlecountyradio.com. The Landon’s Diesel pre-game show will start at 6:00 and kickoff is scheduled for 7.
