The Emery High School boy’s cross country team earned the Region 12 championship by a slim one-point margin Tuesday afternoon at the Carbon Country Club golf course.

Competing against the five other schools in the division, the Spartans ended with 45 points, just one less than second place Richfield. Carbon ended in third with 69, followed by San Juan’s 116. South Sevier and Grand rounded out the field in the regular season finale.

Senior Bryar Meccariello continued to dazzle as he delivered a first place finish with a time of 16:15.8. Jess Christiansen was right behind in second place, finishing eight seconds behind Meccariello to give Emery a one-two finish at the top of the leaderboard.

Merrit Meccariello helped push the Spartans as he ended ninth overall. Camdon Larsen and Zachary Wolford contributed top 20 finishes to help limit the scoring.

The Emery Lady Spartans finished third overall in the region finale. Two top 10 finishes was enough to put them ahead of San Juan and Grand. Carbon finished in first with 31 points, 28 better than second place Richfield.

Adaley Lester was the top placing Lady Spartan, ending fourth with a time of 21:20.9. Kallee Cook was next with her eighth place nod, crossing the finish line at 22:21.4.

Emery will now turn its focus to the 3A State Championship Meet, which will take place on Thursday, Oct. 22 at Soldier Hollow in Midway. The girls will open the day at 11:00 a.m., followed by the boys at 11:30.
