We’ve had a few snow storms in the area that have required snow removal and Sheriff Jeff Wood wanted to discuss how to properly remove snow around your homes.

“You know one of the things that should be top on our priority list is when we are doing our snow removal whether you’re plowing or shoveling or whatever you’re making sure you’re clearing out your fire hydrant that’s close by and not covering it up. In the event that you do have a fire incident they need to be able to get to that quickly to help protect property and lives so that’s one of the things,” stated Sheriff Wood. It’s also important that you clear all sidewalks for the letter carriers so they can safely deliver your mail.

Remember when clearing out your driveways and sidewalks that you do not block your neighbor’s property. “So if you can push snow to the furthest point away of you know on your property do that first because I’ve caught myself taking a shortcut there before and then a bigger storm come and I’m not having as much room to put snow as I would have had I planned ahead,” said Sheriff Wood. Its not a bad idea to chip away at the piles of snow when the sun is out to help the snowmelt.

Pet owners should be making adjustments in providing water to their pets during the winter months. “I bring my pets in at night time, they come in the house, they have crates, they live in the house. Its cold, its down around zero, I’ve seen actually the wind chill below zero in Carbon County already this winter – so it’s cold at night and I bring my dogs in. You know its as crucial in the wintertime for your dog to have fresh water as it is in the summer, they will dehydrate fast – I actually bring in my water bucket as well,” said Sheriff Wood. It’s best to use a large, deep, plastic bowl since a large deep bowl of water freezes more slowly or some pet owners will opt for an electric watering bowl during the winter months.
