The Carbon Dinos used a big fourth quarter run to pull away from the South Sevier Rams for a 73-61 win at home in the Region 12 opener Friday night.
Looking to snap a two-game losing skid, the Dinos played South Sevier to a 41-41 tie at half time. The game remained close as Carbon took a two-point lead into the third quarter, before eventually running away with a double-digit win.
Merrick Morgan led all Carbon scorers with a 17 point performance as he knocked down five three point shots. Morgan also gathered four rebounds and recorded one steal as Carbon improved to 6-3 overall on the season.
Keenan Hatch elevated his offensive game as he chipped in with 16 points to go along with five rebounds. Rylan Hart scored 14, Noah Bradford ended with 12 and Preston Condie contributed 10. A total of seven Carbon players ended with at least one point.
South Sevier struggled to keep pace with Carbon in the fourth quarter despite a brilliant game from Ridge Tebbs. Connecting on four shots from deep, Tebbs ended with a game-high 23 points. Derek Barton was the only other South Sevier player to break the 10-point plateau as he finished with 12.
Friday’s win moves Carbon up one spot to No. 7 in the latest UHSAA RPI rankings.
Now 1-0 in Region 12 play, the Dinos will have a busy week beginning with a road game on Tuesday against North Sevier. The team will turn around Wednesday to meet American Leadership, before ending the week on Friday against Emery on the road in the second Region 12 contest of the season.
