Carbon High School sophomore Gabe Ibanez broke a 16-year-old school record in the 100 Yard Fly Thursday afternoon at the Desert Wave Pool in the Region 12 Championship.

Ibanez, one of Carbon’s top performers throughout the season, shaved 0.69 seconds off of his personal best to finish with a time of 59.52, easily breaking the previous record of 59.64. The record breaking time also placed Ibanez first overall for the event.

“It means a lot. I’ve been swimming for eight or so years and I’ve always enjoyed the Butterfly,” said Ibanez following the performance. “My sister broke the record when she was in high school and I always wanted to get my name next to hers. So I’m really happy about that.”

Ibanez has soared in the 100 Yard Fly throughout the season. His last victory in the event came back on Jan. 8 as the Dinos competed at the Cedar Invitational in Cedar City.

Ibanez has also competed in the 200 Yard IM and the 200 Yard Free Relay. The Region 12 championship is still in session. Stay tuned to Castle Country Radio for the complete results from the meet, which will include the final points from the two-time defending 3A state champion Lady Dinos.
