The Carbon Dinos opened the track and field season with a bang as both the boys and girls team claimed the top spot at the Red Rocks Invitational against nine other schools Saturday afternoon in Moab.

Dealing with wet snow, the Lady Dinos gathered an incredible 229 points, easily defeating second place Grand who finished with 85. North Sevier finished in third with 65 points, followed by South Sevier and Emery.

“Every event that we were involved in from throws to sprints, we had girls pull points all day long,” said head coach Jimmy Jewkes following the team’s performance. “I’ve never seen a team put 229 points in a meet. That’s a new all-time point record for us and to get that you have to have many girls do wonderful things.”

Competing in 14 events throughout the day, the Lady Dinos secured first place finishes in four separate events. The majority of the points came from depth finishes in nearly every competition.

Carbon shined in the 100 meters as they ended with the top three finishes in the finals. Eminie Elliot ended at the top as she finished with a time of 13.91, just beating teammate Lyndee Mower at 13.94. Mia Crompton came in third at 14.64, giving Carbon the top three spots.

The Lady Dinos also grabbed massive points in the relay events, taking home first place in both the 4X100 and 4X400. Makenna Blanc, Paiten Thomas Haylee Prescott and Mower ended the 4X100 in 55.14. Blanc, Prescott and Thomas later joined Beverly Lancaster in the 4X400.

Prescott secured the other individual win for the Lady Dinos as she topped teammate Kinlee Lewis in the high jump. The event worked as another massive point grab for Carbon as they finished first and second.

The Carbon boys team gave the school a sweep in the first meet of the season as they gathered 112 points, topping second place Emery’s 85. Monticello, North Sevier and Grand completed the top five.

Ryker Childs was responsible for the two victories on the boy’s side of the track. Finishing the 100 meters with a time of 11.78, Childs topped Emery standout Treven Brazier’s time of 11.86. Childs later added another win the long jump.

“It is going to be a good rivalry between Ryker and Brazier, those are two really talented kids,” said Jewkes. “The long jump is a new event for him this year and that’s just going to get better and better. The weather wasn’t optimal and he still did a really good job there.”

With the season opening meet now in the books the Dinos will shift their focus to the Farm Bureau Invitational this Friday at home. The meet will mark the first of two home competitions this season.
