The Emery Spartan baseball team traveled to Mount Pleasant on Monday to face the Hawks in a non-conference match-up. Coming off a 14-5 win over American Leadership Academy (ALA) on the road Friday afternoon, they looked to keep their winning streak alive. Unfortunately, after leading for most of the game the Spartans would fall apart in the seventh inning and lose 10-9 falling to 2-1 on the season.
With wins over Providence Hall and ALA, the Spartans have a few games left on their schedule before they start region play on March 23 in Moab against Grand.
The contest against the Hawks started out quietly with North Sanpete holding a 4-2 advantage going in to the top of the fourth inning when Jax Madsen singled to right field scoring Kove Johansen. Later in the inning with the score tied at 4, Jace Mangum singled to center on a line drive scoring Madsen and Luke Stilson and Emery would carry a 7-4 lead in to the fifth. They would go on to add two more runs while holding North Sanpete scoreless for three innings headed to the bottom of the seventh.
The bottom of the seventh inning is when the wheels fell off for Emery. The Spartans would use three pitchers walking seven batters and allowing one hit in a crazy finish to give the Hawks the win.
Jace Mangum went 1-of-2 with two RBI’s in the contest. Luke Stilson went 2-of-3 with an RBI and a run scored and four other Spartan batters had at least one RBI in the game and as a team Emery collected 10 hits.
Tyler Stilson got the start for Emery going 2 1/3 innings giving up four earned runs on three hits while striking out two. Ryker Jensen would come in going 3 2/3, giving up three earned runs on two hits while striking out two. Johansen came to the mound next giving up two earned runs on one hit while walking one and Oakley Alton would give up one earned run while walking three.
The Spartans will be Richfield this weekend for a tournament starting on Friday. They will be playing teams from Milford, Manti, Duchesne and South Summit.
